Exit Engineering – Reinventing the Wheel
The technology developed by Exit Engineering to manufacture carbon fibre boat steering wheels has quickly become the benchmark for this industry worldwide.
Exit Engineering was the first company to develop a steering wheel made from a single moulded structure, successfully offering exceptional strength and low weight.
The European Patent Office has confirmed the innovation, originality and industrial applicability of the international PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) application made by Exit Engineering for its manufacturing process of a monocoque structure. An Italian patent was granted at the end of 2008, and International Patents are awaiting publication.
The elegant three spokes design characterises Exit Engineering’s marine steering wheels as the lightest and strongest available. The detailed development of this design through lessons learnt producing thousands of units, means that the Exit Engineering boat steering wheel that you choose is the same as the ones used on a Volvo Ocean racer or professional maxi racing yacht. An Exit Engineering boat steering wheel is ideal for anyone looking for a more responsive helm, light steering loads and enhanced comfort without sacrificing strength.
Once installed on board, Exit Engineering marine steering wheels dramatically change the look of the cockpit, thanks to a perfect combination of design and technology.
Exit Engineering wheels are easily fitted and are supplied with a hub to fit the existing steering system.
Exit Engineering sailing boat steering wheels are manufactured in Italy and are CE certified.

The unique and elegant design characteristic of Exit Engineering ultra-light carbon fibre boat gangways has also conquered the market of motor yachts, after a leadership of several years in the sailing arena.
These extraordinarily light and manageable boat gangways are extremely quick and easy to use, making this modern boarding system a valid alternative to expensive traditional hydraulic gangways.
Practical and easy to stow aboard, carbon fibre boat gangways are often used on motor super-yachts as additional gangways and for boarding at the sides.
On sport fishing boats, using a carbon fibre boat gangway instead of a hydraulic one provides valuable additional space in the stern area.
Sturdiness is the crowning achievement of Exit Engineering boat gangways, which are all designed and tested to bear a load of 350 kg.
Exit Engineering’s industrial production cycle, entirely made in Italy, has made this carbon fibre accessory an extremely reliable and longlasting product and, despite the many possible customized features offered, it is ready available.

The new small one by Exit Engineering
To complete Exit Engineering's range a new carbon fibre boat steering wheel was put into production upon request of a well-known foreign shipyard and a few sailing teams. The preference agreed to Exit Engineering, against the competition of companies that already produced boat wheels of this diameter, confirms the high professionalism and reliability recognized to this young Italian industry by the international markets.
Here the measures: overall diameter 1050 mm, hub thickness 60 mm, rim thickness 35 mm, weight 1,6 kg.
As all Exit Engineering's marine steering wheels it is built with the patented Continuous Shell Construction Process and designed using the most modern software of structural simulation. The industrial process consolidated and perfected in five years of production permits Exit Engineering to obtain an extremely light, strong and cost competitive boat steering wheel. Exit Engineering confirms the elegant, widely appreciated 3 spoke design that allows a clear view of the instruments. The standard finishing is high gloss carbon fibre with transparent anti UV coating. The wheel is supplied with the suitable hub for any steering brand, built with aluminum alloy and protected with hard anodizing against corrosion and wear. It's easy to install.
The sailboat steering wheels range now comprises diameters of 90 cm, 105 cm, 120 cm, 160 cm, 170 cm, and 180 cm.
Exit Engineering's boat steering wheels are cured in an autoclave at high pressure and temperature and are built in one piece becoming a strong monocoque carbon fibre structure with a perfect finish without any sanding, filling or polishing. The much lower rotational inertia of Exit Engineering's sailing boat steering wheels compared to heavier brands makes for a much more responsive helm. This gives a serious advances to the racer and less fatigue to the cruiser increasing the pleasure and precision of manoeuvres. It is also stated that the power drain on the auto-pilot system becomes considerably lower too.
The delivery time for the complete production that comprises also carbon fibre gangways is 8 to 12 days, and very consistent. This is the big difference between a modern industrial production and an hand-made one. |

January 2006 - Dusseldorf Boat Show
Exit Engineering is steadily improving its reputation as an innovative yet consistent carbon fibre equipment supplier.
True to its name, Exit Engineering opens new real world opportunities to those boatyards who seek high quality alternatives to traditional marine equipment with no risk of inconsistent delivery schedules.
By bringing into play pre-pregs and autoclave curing, coupled with thorough process engineering, Exit Engineering became a supplier of Dehler Deutschland GmbH for its new 47 SQ sailing yacht which will be introduced at Boot Dusseldorf, Hall 17, Stand C19, from January 21 to 29.
Exit Engineering's Technical Director will be in Dusseldorf on the first weekend, 21-22 January, for the official introduction of this new boat and he'll be glad to meet interested persons. Please contact Exit Engineering's offices to set up a meeting in Dusseldorf.
Growing Numbers
We were very pleased when Dehler called to tell us of this new, carbon fibre cruiser racer. They told us they wanted to equip it with our carbon fibre boat gangways, acknowledging their quality, but also understanding that our technology was the ideal solution for the production volumes of a boatyard like Dehler.
This kind of boatyard needs consistent high quality, on time deliveries, and the guarantee that production will be able to meet demand. The only solution allowing the simultaneous achievement of these three goals is a series production driven by careful process engineering, whilst paying attention to product engineering.
What is required is depth of design experience, a highly specialized workforce and a broad knowledge of production processes. Exit Engineering has all this qualities coupled with the high motivation of a young and growing company.
This makes Exit Engineering the perfect partner for the boatyards who manufacture high tech boats in an industrial setting, with medium to big volume series production.

Exit Engineering's innovative boat steering wheels: now it's official
An International Search Report by the European Patent Office confirmed the Novelty, Inventive step, and Industrial applicability of Exit Engineering's International PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) concerning its Continuous Shell construction method for making carbon fibre boat steering wheels in one piece.
This report is valid in any country adhering to the PCT. 128 countries are signatories to the PCT, including all of the major industrialised countries.
After the successful filing for an Italian Patent in 2004, followed by the Nomination at DAME Awards 2004 at its first presentation at METS in Amsterdam, this is another important endorsement of the quality of Exit Engineering's wheels.
In the meantime, Exit Engineering has been extending its range of sailing yacht steering wheels, distinguished from the competition by being a single hollow monocoque carbon fibre structure, with no glue join lines or weak joints.
All Exit Engineering's products are series built with pre-preg carbon fibres and are cured at high pressure and temperature in an autoclave.
Access to complex industrial processes is available to Exit Engineering by vertical integration with one of the major composites industries in Europe, who supply structural components to Formula 1, America's Cup and several aerospace industries. This agreement allows Exit Engineering to concentrate on its core competencies of R&D, design and product development, product assembly, sales and marketing, and distribution.

November 2005 - Gangway has been nominated at Dame Awards 2005
Our biggest, 3.5 meter boat gangway has been nominated for the DAME Awards 2005 in the Deck Equipment category.
We are really proud of this important recognition by the DAME Jury, coming in a row, after our Nomination at DAME 2004 with our first wheel, testifying the persistent success of Exit Engineering's R&D program.
At 3500mm long and weighing just 13 kg it is designed for one person to handle and deploy with ease.
Because of its incredibly light weight, Exit Engineering has been able to break with the tradition of gangways being narrow.
At 600 mm wide, this new boat gangway is 50% wider than most comparable products, making for a safe, comfortable crossing from ship to shore.
No more dangerous balancing acts on long narrow boards!
Manufactured using carbon/epoxy pre-pregs and autoclave curing in female moulds, this gangway has a max load of 350 kg and a beautiful high gloss carbon fibre finish.

METS 2004 - DAME AWARD NOMINATION
Design Award METS, better known as DAME, is the most prestigious prize for boat equipment products and it is the only prize which does not have to be assigned each year. In fact, it is only assigned if products which have enough qualities to merit the award are submitted.
For the same reason, the jury, led by the famous boat designer Tony Castro, has no obligation to nominate products in each category.
EXIT ENGINEERING is thus really proud of their nomination for their patented carbon fibre boat steering wheel, in the most crowded category of deck equipment.
The nomination represents major recognition of this young company's innovative products.
